Water use rising faster than world population

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/10/25/us-population-water-idUSTRE79O3WO20111025

Picture: This picture shows that humans are polluting the water, even when we're using too much of it.

Summary: As the human population reaches nearly 7 billion people, it has been concluded that we are using too much water. It is projected that our water use will only continue, likely by 50% by the year 2025. When there is a drought or any other factor that can affect the usage of water, it will be noticed even more. Only 2.5% of the water on Earth is fresh water and nearly two-thirds of that is frozen. Because of that, about one billion people don't have access to fresh water. There are some rivers that are in danger of being unusable including the Colorado River basin and the Yellow River basin in China. Using too much water is also effecting companies. Some companies including The Gap and Kraft Foods had to cut pay to workers or raise their prices to account for the high price of water.

Opinion: It's pretty nutty that the world is using too much of something that we use everyday. It seems like water should just be a thing that will always be there. I think that it would be a good idea to monitor the usage of water or limit how much a person can use. It's not cool that some people die because they don't have access to water.

Questions:
1. Is it possible to ever completely run out of water?
2. What are some every day ways that you can reduce your water usage?
 3. How much water should a person use a day for every day needs?

  1. Opinion/Reflection: I knew that we had a limited supply of water, but I had no idea that the percentage was so small. It's also crazy and really sad to think that so many people in this world have no access to fresh water. Reading this, I feel like I have wasted so much water in my lifetime. I should stop taking such long showers and try to actually drink all the water before throwing out the bottle.

    Expansion:
"2. What are some every day ways that you can reduce your water usage?"

We could turn off the water when brushing our teeth. And like I said before, we could take shorter showers and limit the number of baths we take.

It is crazy that about 1 billion people dont have access to fresh water. Also it is amazing that we are using so much water that some rivers can be unusable. Also i would have never thought that companies would have to cut the pay of workers because of the water prices. TO tie this into my life I am going to try to take shorter showers so that we can use less water on a daily basis.

To answer one of pat's questions there are many ways to cut back on water usage. Some are to take shorter showers, wash your car less, turn the water off when you brush your teeth, and try to run the dishwasher and the washer machine less often.

  3. opinion: We take water for granted. We do not have and unlimited supply and need to cut back on how much we use so we have enough water for everyone. People here are using too much, like taking too long of showers and because of the overuse we are running out of water.

    Questions:
1)Would it be beneficial to put a nation wide time limit on showers?
    2) Should we make a law where there is a set amount of water you are allowed to use for your size family in a month and if you go over it, you have to pay extra?
3)should they put cameras near water to catch the people who litter in water?

  4. Opinion/Reflection:
I am dumbstruck that it is possible to use too much water. I always thought that since water was a renewable energy source, that we could never use too much. I think it's bad that water is being polluted, and I will try my hardest to use as little water as possible and will never pollute it.
To answer to Pat's first question, I don't think that it is possible to ever completely run out of water, unless we put all of it out of our planet.
